SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM TESTIMONIALS

"I would like to thank the Columbia Chapter NIGP for the scholarship reward which allowed me to attend the 2011 NIGP Forum in National Harbor, Maryland.   Because this was my first time attending Forum, the experience was extra special!

During my stay, I attended several interesting workshops that focused on a “best value” structure to force accountability, transparency and value to procurement.   I also had an opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful Procurement Professionals who were eager to share some of the challenges that they face on the job, and I was impressed with the more seasoned professionals who were there to give sound advice on issues that affect us all as procurement professionals.

The Theme of the conference was “Capitalize on Excellence”, and I must say, the entire experience was true to form, from the moment I arrived at the hotel, until the day that I left, I was impressed at how well the workshop presenters, and the Forum and Product Expo Committee worked together to make sure that the Forum ran smoothly and efficiently, even when faced with the possibility of a hurricane. Thank you again Columbia Chapter NIGP, I truly enjoyed myself!!"

"I want to express my thanks to Columbia Chapter for the $2,000 scholarship that allowed me to attend the National Forum.  In addition to the scholarship, I received $275 from the Rewards program that I applied toward additional conference expenses.  The National Forum is the best and I really appreciate being able to attend this year.

The Forum opened with Commander Kirk Lippold who talked about integrity, vision, personal accountability and responsibility, trusting and investing (not empowering), and professional competence.  He stressed the importance of doing what is right, at the right time, and for the right reason.  He was very motivating and inspiring.

I attended many useful classes including “Business Etiquette & Professionalism in Public Procurement”, “Developing Specifications/Scopes of Work”, “Doing the Right Thing Isn’t Always the Easy Thing To Do”, and “Lateral Leadership”.

The Forum closed with Aron Ralston who had to make the unthinkable choice of losing his life or losing his arm.  Another motivating and inspiring speaker.  I encourage everyone to watch the movie “127 Hours Between a Rock and a Hard Place” or read his book.

While at the Forum, I volunteered on the Quality Control Team and helped in a couple classes.  Didn’t arrive early enough to experience the earthquake, Yay!, but experienced my first hurricane.  Was happy it was only a category 1.

The Forum will be in Seattle next year.  Whether you’ve attended a Forum before or never attended one, try to get to Seattle for this one.  It’s a great opportunity for everyone to learn from lots of knowledgeable speakers and network with other purchasing/contracting professionals from all over.  If your agency is unable to include this in a training budget, look and see what opportunities are available thru your Chapters.  You may be pleasantly surprised!"
